I finially watched Bowling For Columbine yesterday - got angry and sad and sick and angry again. The girls came over and we had to pause the movie 5 times to discuss the stupidity of Americans and how the world is going to hell in a handbasket*
Ok see, it's always so easy and nice to be able to blame everything that's going wrong on the stupid Americans. They in turn blame it on something else - preferable weapons of mass destruction or someone who has oil.
I have friends in the states and my mother's boyfriend is from California. None of them supported the war in Iraq, voted for Bush or own a gun. None of them could be catagorized as a "Stupid American"**. And all of them know that the Icelandic government fully supported the war on Iraq - as it were Iceland is in that ever ongoing war.
So this little island of ever green is in war and we don't even have an army - it was a political thing. They were going to close down the American Army base in Keflavik which would have lost a lot of people their jobs and left this little block of ice absolutley unpretected. So the Icelandic government decided to fully support a war to keep the base.
I had a brilliant thought here about how this is just what is wrong with the world today and how nobody cares for anybody but themselves and how we are all getting immune to death, war and the seriousness of both.
I was going to warn my fellow Icelanders to look closer to home, we are so quick to critisize the Americans for going to war for oil when we in fact went to war for very much the same reasons.
I was going to rampate on about how sick it is that such horrible acts are allowed to occur without ever being properly justified - and no, weapons of mass destructions don't cut it...
I was also going to include a note how the majority of Icelanders did not and do not support the war, as an excuse and how since we don't have an army we didn't really take an active part in it but I don't think we need any more excuses. We need to own up and make things better.
See I was going to go into all that. But the fact is that my head hurts and I'm just too sad to pen my thoughts down in an understandable manner. So I'll make yet another excuse and blame it on the stupid Americans...
*I don't know why exactly we decided it was going there in a handbasket - it would probably be a lot more accurate to say that it's going to hell via DHL or FedEx since it's happening all too fast but it was a bunch of girls so a handbasket it is...
**I have met Stupid Americans though and will not be convinced that they do not exist so J, don't you dare send me a lengthy email about how they are just a myth originated from the Canadians
